Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility

We are very aware of our social and moral responsibilities to tread lightly on our land and to make Bowhill Grange a more environmentally improved place by operating in a sustainable and responsible manner. Our initial efforts have been recognised and we are very proud to have achieved national Sustainable Tourism accreditation from the Australian Tourism Council as a part of their Quality Tourism Framework program.

Initiatives undertaken include the following –

  • Rainwater is collected and stored in a 46,000-litre tank and we have two septic systems, adding to our self-reliance and sustainability, with grey water assisting in property irrigation.
  • Fifty-seven bird species have been sighted either in our grounds or immediate vicinity (including nesting wedge-tailed eagles). We are constantly looking to improve wildlife habitat and have installed a number of nest boxes to assist in this. In late 2022 we were successful in having Tas Networks install bird scarers on 700 meters of the surrounding power lines to prevent what was the regular electrocution of black swans that live on the dam.
  • We have been steadily planting additional trees and shrubs. This includes the establishment of a small eleven-tree orchard and four new garden areas.
  • Possums, wombats, bandicoots, Tasmanian devils, echidnas, forest bats and quolls all live here, whilst rakali and platypus have been spotted in the dam. We hope that increased shelter and shrubs will help attract more of these visitors.
  • We sort and recycle plastics, glass and tins and compost as much organic waste as we can (with help from our little flock of ducks!). We also work hard on eliminating or reducing the use of single use plastics and unnecessary packaging.
  • We are both mindful and respectful of the history of our property and have gone to some lengths to fully understand, interpret and most importantly, communicate this to our guests.
  • We are gradually adding more solar lighting to outdoor areas.
  • We provide guests with free range eggs sourced from a nearby farm and grow our own rhubarb (both of which are used in our home baked muffins).
  • We encourage our guests to shop locally and to visit the many first class Oatlands attractions to help support our community.

We recognise that we are always learning and aim for continual improvements. Any thoughts or suggestions that you may have to help in this are most welcome.
