Bowhill Grange, Oatlands, Tasmania

Located midway between Hobart and Launceston and five minutes from the historic village of Oatlands, the National Trust listed Bowhill Grange is a picture perfect collection of early colonial farm buildings that were built in 1854.

Set in an oasis of green, shaded by a grove of ancient cypress pines and perched on a sandstone ridge overlooking the adjacent dam, Bowhill Grange is circled by hundreds of acres of prime merino pastures with a dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain and the surrounding conservation area.

Originally part of the renowned Anstey Barton estate, ownership passed to six generations of the Agnew family in 1878 under the stewardship of Sir James Agnew, who was subsequently one of Tasmania’s early Premiers.

An integral part of this prominent landholding, Bowhill Grange not only reflects Tasmania’s early colonial history, but was indeed an active contributor, well known throughout the young colony during this period as the home of The Assyrian, the 1882 Melbourne Cup winner, who was stabled here for nearly two decades.

With two beautifully refurbished self-contained cottages, Bowhill Grange is an ideal base to explore the magnificent Southern Midlands and beyond, with Hobart, Launceston and the east coast all about an hour’s drive away. Alternatively why not just sit back, relax and enjoy true country peace and tranquility.

Some Recent Testimonials

In September 2025 we were both proud and honoured to be selected as a Finalist in the Airbnb Australian Host Awards

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“Shepherd’s Rest” is the perfect description of Peter and Ruth’s beautiful sandstone cottage; as we felt like shepherds while overlooking the flock of sheep in the adjoining paddock. We have had a wonderfully restful time while staying here. Ruth and Peter are perfect hosts. They are unobstrusive, but the welcome was excellent. The decor of the cottage is just perfect – not too much, but still homely. We cannot recommend this stay enough. Thank you Ruth and Peter – you are perfect custodians of such a special place. We are definitely planning to return again soon.t😊

“We had a magical 3 nights at Bowhill Grange. Ruth and Peter were perfect hosts. This was the BEST airbnb experience we have had. The cottage had lots of special touches that made us feel at home and pampered. We highly recommended the delicious platter Ruth prepared for us. The surroundings were idealic and so peaceful but at the same time has Oatlands village down the road with bars, cafes and historical sites. If you are a golfer the oldest golf course in Australia is 40 minutes away. All in all, we had a perfect stay.”

“Ruth and Peter are just delightful hosts, they think of everything. Thoughtful touches such as underfloor heating in bathroom and bedroom. Lighting the open fire before your arrival, having plenty of wood available only metres away. Lovely interiors which are not over done and have been created with love and care. Books to read and games to play. A kitchenette which has everything tucked away.
We stayed in Sheppards Rest and the temperature was -2 we have never been more cosy and warm. Opening the drapes in the morning nice and warm and then seeing the frozen fields made it difficult for us to leave this little nest.
Thank you Ruth and Peter for making our midlands stay warm and toasty we look forward to seeing you next time.”
